PS41
This 15,000 square foot sedum and native plant green roof is the first-of-its-kind on a New York City public school. PS 41's opened its Green Roof Environmental Literacy Laboratory (GELL) creating a learning environment for students in all grade levels.
Since the completion of the green roof in 2013, data from the 2019 Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star's Portfolio Manager, details a 35.30% decrease in total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the school's 2008 energy baseline. There was a 35.30% reduction in the annual energy that PS 41 consumes onsite. PS 41's green roof has a building energy letter "A" and has significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions on City-owned property. The 9,000 square feet of vegetation can sequester roughly 182,250 gallons of stormwater annually. The green roof is a critical wildlife habitat for native and migratory birds and insects.
